Our Privileged Responsibility
Malachi served as a prophet of God approximately 900 years after the Levitical priesthood had been established. The priests had once held a deep reverence for God, but they now ceased to teach the truth and lost all sense of their calling. Through Malachi, God sent the priests a sharp rebuke. Malachi 2:7-9

This is The Way, Walk in It
God’s desire is that we walk down the path He lays before us. This path begins with the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus; “For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life” (John 6:40). The path continues with living a life of holiness; “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:15).
We walk further down His path as we learn contentment “in any and every situation” (Philippians 4:12), as we are filled with joy, prayer and thanksgiving (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), and as we begin to truly rest in the peace which only He provides; “Peace I leave you; My peace I give you” (John 14:27). It’s important to remember that each step down God’s path is for the purpose of being “conformed to the likeness of His Son, that He may be the firstborn of many brothers” (Romans 8:29). Every step, no matter how difficult, brings us closer to God and shapes us to be more like Jesus.
Have we entered onto God’s path through faith in Jesus Christ? Are we now continuing down the path God desires for us to walk? When confronted with choices, is it obvious which direction we should go?
Isaiah 30:21
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
When we trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins, we are adopted into God’s Family and begin a journey which lasts the rest of our days. At the moment of Salvation God gives us His Spirit to guide us along His path; but many times when His Spirit calls, we’re too busy to listen – or we choose not to respond.
If we have entered onto God’s path and now desire to follow where He leads, we MUST make time to simply slow down and listen; “In repentance and rest is your Salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15). Our eternal Salvation is a transformation which occurs in an instant, but the earthly joy of our Salvation is found in our daily repentance and quiet guidance from God – His presence is our only place of true peace.
The guiding voice of His Spirit still calls every day, but the competing noise is often so great that we stray from the path and become entangled in the weeds (and there is definitely no peace or contentment in the weeds!). Let’s get out of the weeds and continue on His path. Let’s set aside quiet time to listen for guidance – to hear which way to turn – and to simply rest in His loving arms. And let’s be determined to boldly follow when we hear His gentle voice calling, “This is the way, walk in it!”

His Message and His Ministry
Ahithophel was a highly regarded advisor to King David; “Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God” (2 Samuel 16:23). But when David’s son, Absalom, rebelled and sought to become the new king, Ahithophel joined with Absalom. Ahithophel had reason to be angry with David; he was the grandfather of Bathsheba and had watched as David violated his granddaughter and then had her husband killed (2 Samuel 11).
In his anger Ahithophel advised Absalom how to defeat David, but God had other plans; “The Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom” (2 Samuel 17:14). When Absalom refused to follow his advice, Ahithophel took the rejection very personally.
2 Samuel 17:23
“When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself.”
Ahithophel had once been close to God and was used for many years to give godly direction. But at some point Ahithophel began to take too much ownership of his ministry. He determined his self-worth based on the results of his ministry and began to use his gifts for his own selfish purpose. When his message was no longer trusted and his ministry was not going in the direction he desired, his self-worth fell and he found he had no reason to continue.
God has called each of us to be His messengers and has given us a ministry of sharing the Gospel; “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20). Some are called to preach a message of hope to a large congregation. Others have been called to instruct a small group or to encourage just one…but we have all been called!
We are never responsible for the outcome of a ministry, only for the obedience of faithfully delivering His message. God remains in complete control of any and all results: “My Word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). As we walk in obedience, His purpose (not ours!) will be accomplished.
We must never lose sight of the One who called us to serve. Our worth is in being a Child of God, not in the praises we receive or in what we can accomplish. We must continue to be obedient messengers who proclaim the Good News, teach the truth, and encourage at every opportunity. And when we become discouraged, we must check our focus and always remember…this is His message and His ministry.

Are You Busy Enough for God to Use?
Have
you ever wondered why God seldom goes to a lazy or idle person when He
wants someone to perform a great or noble act of service? When He has
such special work, the Lord chooses someone who is already very busy
faithfully executing their prescribed task.
Anonymous
once wrote, “Those who tread the path of labor, follow where Christ’s
feet have trod; they who work without complaining, do the holy will of
God.” The Word of God says, “The soul of the diligent shall be made fat”
(Proverbs 13:4). Are you a busy person?
One of my favorite poems, The Busy Man, was also written by our mutual friend Anonymous.
“The man of leisure never has a moment he can spare;
He’s always putting off until his friends are in despair.
But he whose every waking hour is crowded full of work,
Forgets the art of wasting time—he cannot stop to shirk.
So when you want a favor done and want it right away,
Go the man who works with zeal lo, many hours a day.
He’ll find a moment sure somewhere that has no other use,
And help you while the idle man is framing an excuse.”
Have you found this poem to be true in your life experiences?
God knows this truth. Consider the following examples of individuals God used:
Moses was busy with his flock at Horeb – Exodus 3:1-10
Gideon was threshing wheat at the winepress – Judges 6:11-14
Old Testament Saul was searching for his father’s lost donkeys – 1 Samuel 9:1-16
David was caring for his father’s sheep – 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Elisha was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen – 1 Kings 19:15-21
Nehemiah was bearing the king’s wine cup – Nehemiah 1:1-3, 11
Amos was busy following the flock – Amos 7:14-15
Peter and Andrew were busy with their fishing business – Matthew 4:18-20
Likewise, James and John were mending their fishing nets – Matthew 4:21-22
Matthew was busy collecting taxes – Matthew 9:9
New Testament Saul was actively persecuting the friends of Jesus – Acts 9:1-9
Are you busy enough for God to use? God calls individuals when they are busy—Satan does so when they are idle! Our prolific author friend, Anonymous, also once said, “You cannot ‘kill time’ without affecting eternity!”
What does your calendar look like this week?
GLORY TO HIS HOLY NAME....
